Day 50 of 100 [Alex_ADEdge] – Ludum Dare Post-Jam, Results!

Half way through the challenge! Feeling the burnout.

I think the burnout has hit a bit sooner than the first time I did this challenge. I did do a lot of hours early on, especially with Ludum Dare happening and Ive had a lot of other (non-gamedev) related stuff going on. So the past few weeks have gone by a bit slower. I still found myself working a lot on Ventureville, putting in the hours to get it up to scratch. That at least provided me with more material to blog about on the ludum dare site itself. A lot of people who were playing and rating Ventureville had mentioned theyd like to see a more fleshed-out version and I wanted to see the game live up to its potential a bit more too. I wanted to get the post-jam version done before the voting period was over.

Thankfully, I hit that milestone, and it went online a few days before the voting ended!

The changelog is long and you can find the Ludum Dare post with more details here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/ventureville/ventureville-post-jam-edition

So current links to the game itself:

Results for Ventureville in Ludum Dare 41 came in next:

Overall we made it into the top third of all games (with just over 3000 entries overall) and I was really happy to see the high scores in Graphics/Audio and Humour! In graphics especially, we placed in the top 5% of games. Audio and Humour in the top 8% – which is great!

So that wraps up everything to do with Ludum Dare.

Looking at how dogeDIG is doing, Ive been getting back into working out the direction I want to take with the graphics. At this point Ive decided to dive ahead into some kind of voxel based animation setup Ive had in mind for a while. Thats probably going to need a good deal of experimenting. Meanwhile I can keep working on the other elements of the game while I try to nail down the graphics – still hoping to have a gameplay prototype completed by the end of the challenge, so thats the goal.

For the trooper character study Ive started on the redesign of the low poly by going back to some 2D sketching. I got my tablet dusted off and working again and its been great to get back into sketching out some changes to the trooper armour, starting with the Helmet and visor! I never really liked the Old Republic version of the troopers that much, so its been fun starting to add my own twist to the design. Ive been taking a lot of notes as I work through Alex Fugini’s tutorial too, as Id like to have a solid pipeline/workflow sorted out by the end of this project.

So in wrapping up the half way point, heres the stats for the first half of the challenge:
