Day 60 of 100 [Alex_ADEdge]

Day 60 has passed!

I went back to focusing on the 2 main projects, so details on what Ive been working on in regards to those after the stats:

Solid hours so far, altho it has tapered off a bit since earlier in the challenge.

dogeDIG:

I worked on a variety of areas of dogeDIG this week. I started rewriting the player controller code (again), merging it in with the animation controller. Id originally written the animation controller separately due to the animated mesh/bones being a child object of the physics component of the player and it was starting to get too complex. It had to be there though, because of the way Unity works with animations (because of how animation events call methods from scripts) – but having what was turning quickly into 2 separate state machines was a baaad idea.

So, thats coming along well and Im also continuing to rewrite the terrain generation code, which is basically being ported from a broken javascript version into a nicer (and hopefully functional) C# version. Looking back at several-years old code is interesting, it gives you some real perspective on how far youve come but with that being one of the core aspects of the game I need to get that running soon.

Also on the dogeDIG front, Ive continued working on the Style Guide Document (SGD) and Ive taken what Ive researched and learned into some WIP animation tests, starting with the bat character because its the most minimalistic and ‘complete’ character I have for the game – which makes it perfect for some tests. By day 60 I had this WIP flight animation coming along nicely.

Next step is to see it in action and start working out how to get this working how I want in Unity.

A lot of uncertainty about whether this will work or even be feasible, but half the fun is working it out!

Trooper Character Study:

For the character study, I mainly focused on iterating the design during this 10 days which meant continuing with the sketching. Lots of new ideas, but Im trying to not let this phase spiral out of control and take any longer than it needs to since Im already way behind where I wanted to be. But here you see a sketch of the trooper, with the new helmet I designed and some other ideas for the captain version of the armour. He also needs a cloak, to add some fabric elements to the design, which Ive got a pretty good idea of currently but haven’t yet sketched. But at this point I can move ahead and keep designing that stuff when needed.

Also spent some time brainstorming ideas for a location and short real-time animation to show off the model after a brainwave I had – which is really exciting and I cant wait to work on. But thats outside the scope of this 100 days challenge. Right now I want to be finishing the main parts of the sketching/redesign and getting onto the next stage – the high poly sculpt.

Time to armour up and get into it!
